Fred Dawson has headed businesses tracking the technologies and trends shaping the evolution of electronic media and communications for nearly four decades. Currently, along with spearheading UltraMedia Pipeline, Dawson provides consulting services as listed above and serves as a regular contributor to TV Technology Magazine. The consulting engagements range across a broad range of suppliers in the broadband services industry, including most recently:

Telestream   Amagi  Wasabi    Motion Spell Balanced Business Advisors    Ateme V-Nova Mediagenix Red5 Imagine Intertrust Real Networks Nokia CommScope NAGRA Consumer Technology Association

Dawson has long played a lead role in driving industry awareness of market-moving technology advances. Early in his career he became known as a champion for the cable industry’s use of amplitude-modulated optics, which, despite prevailing expert opinion saying it couldn’t be done, became the foundation for the hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network that gave birth to broadband internet. Later, his newsletter The Cable-Telco Report in April 1990 became the first publication to draw industry attention to MPEG video compression, which led to the digitization of TV. Other firsts included reports on the development of cable broadband and DSL technologies and the breakthrough in millimeter wave propagation that enabled delivery of TV and cellular services at those wavelengths.

Dawson also produced the industry newsletters DBS Report and Broadband Commerce & Technology. He subsequently served as vice president of editorial at Virgo Publishing prior to launching the monthly trade magazine ScreenPlays on a 16-year run that documented the emergence and growth of the OTT streaming sector. And he authored Optimizing the Future with Next-Generation DOCSIS, a book on cable broadband technologypublished by the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers.

UM Pipeline succeeds ScreenPlays with the goal of providing the same level of tech-savvy guidance to industry strategists, in this case as market demand drives next-gen developments tied to the emergence of real-time interactive streaming (RTIS) in tandem with AI-fueled application performance optimization and high-density virtualized cloud processing. As the first publication to provide thorough coverage of RTIS, UMP continues in the tradition of bringing to light transformative technologies that otherwise garner little if any attention from other outlets in the early going.
